Year 5 Meet Tony Bradman

Last Wednesday, we were delighted to welcome author Tony Bradman to Year 5. Many of our children had never met an author before; the excitement was heightened because children are  excited by the author’s engaging historical adventure and fantasy book. Tony spoke about his childhood and told children that they should make the most of each and every opportunity that may come their way.

Tony spoke about his inspiration to become an author, his interest in history – especially the Viking period and his numerous trips to the British Museum in London. He told us that his teacher – Mr Smith - read ‘The Hobbit’ to them and it was this book that turned him into a writer. He told children that teachers and books are the source of his success. (A much loved quote by us teachers!)

Describing the writing process and how books are edited Tony emphasised the importance of editing work, he shared his initial notes with us and gave tips on how to decide which words to keep and which to delete. He told us that a book can go through many edits before finally being published demonstrating the importance of perseverance and following your dreams.

It was an inspirational talk and based on the questions asked at the end it seems we have quite a few budding authors in Year 5.
