St Swithun's CE Primary School awarded Advocate School Status
St Swithun's Primary School has been appointed as an Inspire Maths Advocate for 2017/18
Claire Thomas, maths lead, and headteacher Helen Atkinson said: “The introduction of Inspire Maths and the Singapore approach at St Swithun’s has had an extremely positive impact across the school. It has not only increased the progress and attainment of the children, but it has also had an incredibly positive impact on their attitude towards and enjoyment of maths. Furthermore, it has had an encouraging impact on their confidence through the use of practical resources and partner discussion. This has helped them to develop deeper understanding of concepts rather than a set procedure to achieve the right answer. The children’s ability to reason mathematically has also noticeably improved, they are willing and able to explain their thinking using accurate mathematical vocabulary. The teachers have also identified that using this approach has helped them to become more confident in teaching at a mastery level and that there is more of a ‘buzz’ and ‘have a go’ attitudes during their maths lessons.” Inspire Maths is a whole-school primary maths programme that provides everything you need to support a mastery approach to teaching and learning mathematics, and meet the higher expectation of the 2014 National Curriculum. Inspire Maths Advocate Schools would be happy to welcome teachers from local schools during open mornings throughout the year, to observe their lessons and to see first-hand the impact Inspire Maths has had on results, and pupil engagement. Sue Lowndes, Inspire Maths professional development lead for Oxford University Press says, “I am delighted that St. Swithun’s Primary has become a Inspire Maths Advocate School. It has been a pleasure to see how this school's best practice in following the Singaporeapproach has developed the teaching and learning for staff and pupils.”
